The Farewell for SATB choir showcases an excerpt from a poem by Kahlil Gibran of the same title. Kayla Werlin — the person to whom this work is dedicated — recommended the poem, and it resonated with me because of its imagery, warmth, and empathy.
This music comes from a place of profound gratitude. Singing defined my high school experience and set me on a fun, frustrating, and fulfilling artistic path. While I’m now primarily a composer, singing has continued to influence every area of my practice, and writing for voices always feels natural and comfortable. The chance to compose a work for my high school choir offered a chance to revisit musical works that influenced me as a young musician, and many of them are represented in The Farewell in some way. |
